We are writing about brake pads as a sub-section of brakes so we don't have to describe the brake pad on each brake. There are just a few of them that every brake manufacturer seems to use. We have used our durometer to test the hardness of each pad's rubber compound. The hardness won't reveal anything about the compounds abrasiveness, some makers have a silica or sand aspect to enhance the pad's abrasion of the rim. The abrasion of the pad continually smooths the outer rim to give it a flat gripping surface.
