Brake Hanger Index

BRAKE CABLE HANGERS

When you read the overview in the Stem article of this book, you realize that there have been a number of attempts to make a standard for the way the front brake cable housing is terminated and the cable's straight passage on to the brake. At present, cable hangers seem to be the winner, if you don't have a suspension fork (where it would terminate at the fork brace). They come in two mounting styles, those that are located within the headset under the headlock nut, and the more popular binder types that clamp onto the quill of the stem or a threadless steerer tube.

Though the binder style was originally intended for the threadless forks, you can use the binder type with a threaded fork by using the next smaller diameter on the quill of the stem. Remember, the 1" quill is really 7/8" (22.2mm) in outer diameter, the 1 1/8" quill is really 1" (25.4mm) and the 1 1/4" is really 1 1/8" (28.6). This will avoid stack height difficulties sometimes associated with the under the headlock nut type.
