Salsa Hub Skewers
SALSA STAINLESS STEEL FLIP-OFF SKEWERS
Salsa was also an early player in the sale of lightweight CNC machined aluminum replacement skewers. A part of this was headed by Salsa's relationship with Dave Garouette the founder and owner of DKG. DKG has been the maker of Salsa's seat clamps sold with their frames, and as a CNC machine shop it became an fit for them to make the aluminum parts of the Flip-Off skewers. The lever is machined from billet aluminum and 77mm long, and 1/2" high. The lever narrows as it moves through two sets of curves toward the end. The shape and "feel" are quite natural, maybe the most natural of all, with the thumb fitting the back of the lever and the rest of the hand able to press the lever closed. The lever has a cam shape to apply compound pressure to close and lock the skewer. The cam rotates against an aluminum concave contact washer, (cam follower). The 19mm contact diameter washer has a flat face. The nut is machined from aluminum rod, has a 19mm contact diameter with a flat inner face. The nut roundness of the nut is cut away making two flats for the thumb and forefinger to grip. A plastic insert at the outer end of the inner threads, holds the nut stationary, once properly in place. The pivot pin holding the skewer rod to the lever is made of stainless steel. The skewer rod itself is made from 4.42mm diameter Stainless Steel steel. The Flip-Off uses volute springs made from round spring steel wire. The weight of the front Flip- Off is 49 grams, the rear weighs 53 grams. The Flip-Off skewers are available in anodized Blue, Black, Green , Lavender, Red, Silver or Rasta (Green/Red/Gold mix). SALSA TITANIUM FLIP-OFF SKEWERS
With all the other parts the same os those used above, the steel skewer rod is replaced by a slightly thicker 4.75mm diameter Titanium 6Al-4V skewer rod. The weight of the Ti Flip-Off front is 43 grams, the rear weighs 45.5 grams. Flip-Off Ti skewers are available anodized in Blue, Black, Green , Lavender, Red, Silver or Rasta (Green/Red/Gold mix).
