Tioga Bar Ends
TIOGA SHORT POWER STUDS 1Though this is one of two Tioga bar end introductions, we have seen this pair of bar ends before. Onza sold this same set as the their MT-04A bar ends from 1991 to 1993. We believe that Hsin Lung is responsible for their manufacture based on the logo that appears inside the broached bolt head on the cinch bolt. Hsin Lung you may recall makes stems, handlebars, and seatposts under both the Hsin Lung and their "Zoom" brand name. You might wonder how Tioga came to be representing a previous Onza product as their own. Onza's exclusive sales arrangement on this bar end may have lapsed or, remember David Ajiki one of the two founding partners in Onza worked for Oriental Boeki Corporation, which uses the "Tioga" brand name on the parts they sell. David's job at OBC/Tioga was to evaluate cyclists needs and establish delivery contracts with factories contracted to actually manufacture the Tioga branded parts, including Hsin Lung. The Power Stud cinch assembly is cold forged of aluminum alloy, the hole for the handlebar is honed to bring it to more perfect roundness. The lower side of the cinch assembly is drilled for the cinch bolt. The drilling recesses the bolt head and makes the pilot hole for the tapped threads. The Short Power Stud comes with a Nickel plated steel bolt and washer, that has 6mm x 1mm thread pitch, is 20mm long and weighs 6.5 grams. SRP makes a direct Titanium replacement for this bolt, (sold in pairs, our part # 05-91-CB), which weighs 3 grams each. The grip tube is 5 1/4 inches long and made of 6061 aluminum alloy tubing. It is press fit onto the cinch assembly and epoxy bonded to it. The cinch assembly holds the grip section tubing at a 14 degree from handlebar perpendicular, inward angle toward the front tire. At 2 3/4 inches from the cinch assembly, the grip tube bends inward at an additional 55 degrees, and upward at 28 degrees. The short Power Stud set comes with Back plastic press-in grip end plugs installed. Tioga also includes 2 press-in Black plastic handlebar end plugs. The clamp is always Silver with the grip tube available in Black, Blue or a Titanium grey color. The weight of a set of short Power Studs bar extensions, with steel bolts, and plugs is 174.5 grams. Made in Taiwan, these have limited availability, have a back-up choice, and specify color.
TIOGA LONG POWER STUDS 2The long Power Studs are an aluminum "L-bend" version of the short Power Studs above. This long version was previously sold world-wide as the Onza MT-74A. The bolt has the Hsin Lung brand mark so we believe these to be manufactured by HL. The long Power Studs use nearly, but now exactly, the same aluminum clamp piece and design as the short Power Studs. They do use the same cinch bolt. The aluminum grip tube section on these is 7 1/8" long and made of 6061 alloy. The cinch assembly holds the grip section tubing at a 14 degree, from handlebar perpendicular, inward angle toward the front wheel. At 2 1/2 inches from the cinch assembly, the grip tube bends at an added 60 degrees of inward angle and 9 degrees of upward angle. The grip tube is epoxy bonded to the cinch assembly. The long Power Stud comes with Back plastic press-in grip end plugs installed. Tioga also includes 2 press-in Black plastic handlebar end plugs. The clamp is always Silver with the grip tube available in Black, Blue or a Titanium Grey color. The weight of a set of long Power Studs bar extensions, with steel bolts and plugs is 200.5 grams. Made in Taiwan, these have limited availability, have a back-up choice, and specify color.specify color. |

In-depth Information About Metals Aluminum Aluminum is extracted electrolytically from bauxite ore. It is made by the electrolysis of aluminum oxide which is found in larger concentrations within bauxite ore. Bauxite is a mixture of the hydroxides of aluminum, together with other impurities such as oxides of iron, titanium, and silicon. Bauxite is produced by the weathering and change of aluminum silicate rocks usually found in tropical and semitropical regions where climate has produced an accelerated weathering process. Bauxite is not a rare ore and is widely available in the US, the Caribbean, and Europe. Approximately 4 pounds of read the full article... Beryllium Beryllium is a specialty metal that is steel-grey metal in color, with an extremely low density, making it very light weight. At 1.85 grams to the cubic centimeter, its density compares to that of magnesium. It is also a high strength metal, making it possible to design light weight, thin membered parts with ahigh stiffness. A column made of beryllium to support a load placed directly downward on top of it, will have a greater load carrying capacity, and be lower in weight than any other metal of equal size. Until the 1950's beryllium was used read the full article... Titanium The element titanium was discovered in 1763 by an English cleric, William Gregor who was an amateur chemist with an inquiring mind. It was in the black sands of Cornwall that he discovered the new element that had up to that time, attracted little scientific interest. A few years later, an Austrian, Klaproth, extracted the same element from an ore widely known as "rutile", which is a mineral consisting of titanium dioxide (one titanium atom, two oxygen atoms), that is a reddish-brown substance with a slight metallic luster. While rutile is the highest grade read the full article... Metallurgic Hardness Testing There are three types of tests used with accuracy by the metals industry, they are the Brinell hardness test, the Rockwell hardness test, and the Vickers hardness test. Hardness is the property of a metal which gives it the ability to resist being permanently deformed (bent, broken, or have its shape changed), when a load is applied. The greater the hardness of the metal, the greater resistance it has to deformation. Since the definitions of metallurgic ultimate strength and hardness are rather similar, it can generally be assumed read the full article... |
